Goal 1 of The 30 Goals Challenge 2011
Goal
Short-term- Offer a student or other educator you see struggling support. It could be a colleague who is stressed or a student struggling with another subject. Who in your life needs your support?
Long-term- In what ways can we help students learn to support each other throughout the learning process? How can we build a supportive community with the colleagues in our school? How do we get away from the “us” versus “them” mentality?
Quote
“You cannot force commitment, what you can do…You nudge a little here, inspire a little there, and provide a role model. Your primary influence is the environment you create.”
by Peter Senge, suggested by John Evans (@joevans)
Need Ideas?
- Create a Wallwisher to celebrate someone’s birthday, achievement, anniversary, etc!
- Help a teacher with a lesson plan!
- If a student is having a bad day, tell his/her parent something nice!
- Send a message through social media outlets!
- Dedicate a song through BlipFm.
- On Facebook or Twitter send a nice DM showing support.
- Send an e-card wishing a friend well or give them a happy post-it note or a greeting card. My favorite e-greetings site is Care 2 Cards where your card supports a cause.
- Make an Animoto video or Blabberize the message. You can find more services to show appreciation here!
- Try these mobile apps to show appreciation!
Challenge:
Be a beam and show support for a colleague or student by the end of today! Don’t forget to reflect about the goal after you achieved it and share!

Love this idea Shelly! And thanks for the shout out! Totally wasn’t expecting that. Looking forward to this year’s goals and challenges.

Hi Shelly! Really happy to be joining this challange. Goal #1 is something I feel I’ve already accomplished with my colleagues, trying to help them in every way with the use of technology. Now I have to consider being a beam for my students in a deeper sense.
Thanks again for starting this excellent challenge!
Hey Shelly,
Great idea as always… Posted my reflections on here

Hi Shelly!
Loved today’s goal. My answer to it in this post http://sabridv.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/virtual-beams/
Wallwisher is great! I have a coworker who has been at home recovering from a fall on the ice. I made a wall and sent a message to my other coworkers, his friends and other colleagues. People were posting right away! Thanks for the link, Shelly.
Awesome way to use Wallwisher!
My biggest question is… how do you do it all? I am always in awe of all that you accomplish Shelly! When talking about “be a beam”, you are a huge part of that support structure for many people the world over (myself included). Thanks for all you do, share, and inspire with us!
The 30 goal challenge is fascinating and I’m ready to tackle it. Let’s hope I have the staying power to see it through all 30! Here’s #1: http://reflectrepentreboot.blogspot.com/2011/02/challenge-1-be-beam.html

LOL! Well Christina somethings go awry
Ok, I did this one today. I love wallwisher and have used it with the staff at my school. But, some teachers are nervous to use it. So, today I sent a link to the staff for us to post our favorite thing about our school. So, we are posting positive messages and using technology. It was great. Here is the link to our page.

This is a GREAT goal, we could all use a little beam in our lives
You are a fantastic BEAM Shelly!
Kelly,
You’re a beam as well! Thanks for your continual shining & support!
Hi Shelly,

Goal #1- I recently had a colleague want to incorporate more technology and creativity into her curriculum. She asked for assistance and we spent a couple hours after school reviewing possibilities. I also had a student come in to see me about her grades. She has been “difficult” for some time but now faced some legal issues. Her grades were important. We had a great talk and worked out a way for her to improve her grades and meet the legal requirements. It was a process of compromise and she learned that I really did care. She now comes in to discuss assignments and current events!
OK, well this is and isn’t tech related but here goes. I recently had a very unexpected mild stroke and today (Wed, 2/9/2011) was my first day back in the classroom. My students were very excited for me to be back after a lengthy time off as were my fellow teachers. I am teaching the art of summarizing to some 8th graders for English and my lesson that I put on the back-burner was using the “Twitter” idea to summarize crucial events of a news article. They LOVED it. They thought I had gone away to recharge my batteries (little did they know)and came back with brilliant ideas. (ok not really so brilliant, but hey it works). I love the idea that through some issues personally I can be considered that “BEAM” and reflect out to my students and they can pick up on that and send it right back! Bring on the next goal! What’s one more!
I just found the 30 Goals challenge. I’m about a month late, but this is exactly what I need. I’m going to just start at the beginning.
Does setting up and moderating #mathchat count? Hope so!
Hi Shelly,
Here is my first 30 goals challenge blog: http://thelizziepinardworldofteachingefl.wordpress.com/
Great idea! I’ve enjoyed reading others takes on them and enjoyed writing my own…
Cheers,
Lizzie.
Help anotehr teacher today with an excel spreaadsheet. She had built the basics but needed help in some of the advanced formatting. This teacher has been very reluctant in using technology in anyway, so I was very happy to assist her. I was sure to tell her how proud I am of her for giving this a try.
Welcome to the challenge! That definitely is being a beam and supporting her while she experiments and tries new things is one of the greatest ways to motivate her to continue.
